Close up of Sunspots
Detail: Active Sunspot Regions

Analysis: What are we looking at?

The Photosphere: The bright, visible surface of the Sun is called the photosphere. It has a temperature of about 5,500°C (9,932°F). The granular texture you can sometimes see is caused by convection cells of plasma rising and falling.

Sunspots: The dark spots visible in the second image are temporary phenomena on the Sun's photosphere. They appear dark because they are cooler than the surrounding areas. They are caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux that inhibit convection.
